The Kiwanis Club of Flint organizes and hosts a countywide student athlete recognition program that began in 1976 by local sports reporter Pete Sark, who originally named the program to honor his father Donald B. Sark. Pete’s lifetime of coverage and appreciation of local sports is legendary, creating this esteemed recognition of high school athletes, as well as the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame honoring record holders and teams through the years.
Athletes of the Month
To be nominated as male and female student athlete of the month is an honor, as athletic directors representing each of the local conferences, brings names of nominees each month from the schools they represent. This committee of athletic directors along with a Kiwanis member, vote each month from this select pool to name a male and female athlete of the month. These students are honored each month, September through May, at a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Flint. Student athletes are selected as athlete of the month based upon athletic achievements, academic excellence, and school and community service.
Athletes of the Year
From the pool of male and female athletes of the month, the selection committee once again evaluates these honorees to select a male and female athlete of the year. They, and all students nominated throughout the year, are recognized at the annual banquet. A scholarship is awarded to the male and female athletes of the year. Following is a roster of the recipients. You will recognize names of many local athletes who have had outstanding college careers and have gone on to olympic and professional competition.
